4 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 4th [May 1883]. I made cigarettes in the morning & was at work when Lady Alwyne Compton came to borrow some books for Lady Gordon & to ask me to get her some servants. It was a fine day. While we were at lunch Tea Marcello called & struck us as a very pretty girl who promises to be beautiful. Mr & Mrs Victor Drummond called. He is Brit: Secy at Vienna. She a pretty showy American. Henry to go off directly after lunch to Danieli’s to take the P. & Pss to Murano & agreed to meet me at Mrs Brown’s Palazzo Balbi Valier at 5 o’cl. Mr & Mrs Eden fetched me in their gondola & took me for a row out towards St Helena & left me at 5 at Mrs Brown’s. Met there Mr & Mrs J. Addington Symonds & Mr & Mrs Curtis, the Hurtados &c had tea & walked in the garden to see Mrs Brown’s flowers. At last as Henry did not come I went away with the Hurtados & took a row with them & then came home. Henry came after 7 & I found they had been all the way to Torcello & Murano in a steam launch. We dined at home– Cribbage.
