5 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 5th May [1883]. Idita came this morning in her sandalo to take me out. It was blowing so hard that we thought we should hardly be able to go but after a little while the wind went down again & we started to go to Lady Gordon to tell her abt some servants Idita recommends. We met the Comptons & Lady Gordon outside our door going up the canal & we begged them to come to the Britannia to meet us & save us going to the Civran wh they agreed to do. We went by the small canals to the Britannia & got rather wet in landing there as the waves were dashing up. Lady Marian was not quite ready but we waited in her room & soon were joined by Lady Gordon & the Comptons when Idita unfolded her budget & told them the people she recommended. After she had done with Lady Gordon they left & she then turned to Lady Marian’s affairs—all this brought us to nearly 12 o’cl, when Idita had to go home to breakfast. We sent the sandalo to S. Moisé & got into it there & Idita brought me home. Rested a little—lunched & at 2 went off to the Stabto for some business of Henry’s & then by 3 to the Royalties at Danielli’s. We went with them to S. Giobbe and to the Botanical Gardens and thence Seckendorff, the Crown Pss & I went off in my gondola to Mercatos to see some red damask wh HRH wanted to buy. I ordered it to be sent to our house for her to inspect. She was not known by Mercato & we stayed a very short time & then went back to Manfrin Palace & rejoin the others & show the remains of the Collection to the Pss. We went on to the Scuola de S. Giov: Evangelista– it was raining a little off & on– After we came out of the Scuola we parted with them & went to our home. I went first to Mrs Bronson to ask her to find Mr Howells the American writer & drive him to us. Dressed [&] dined early & at 8.30 the C. Prince & Pss & Pss Victa & the 3 attendants arrived. We had a large party of English in the evening. Lady Marian Alford, Ld & Ly Alwyne Compton, Lady Gordon, Ld & Ly Egerton of Tatton, who are just new here, the Hurtados, Mrs Eden, Mrs Bronson & her daughter, &c &c. Mrs Bronson brought Mr Howells—a very small fat little man—very American and of course was much flattered at having been sought out by the Pss. Tea & ices were served in the dining room—& we had quite a gay little party– The Royal party remained till 10.30—quite late for them.
