16 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 16th May [1883]. Practised the guitar, wrote—read– After lunch Henry went out & came back for me abt 4. I practised again the guitar. Genl. de Horsey paid me a visit at 4.30, went to the tea party given by Capt. Briscoe on board the Tanjore & called at Idita’s & took her with us & also Mrs Eden who was with her. We found all the Venetian society on board—we had tea & then went to see the cabins we are to have if we make our projected trip to India in Octr. Played a game called “buckets” wh consists in throwing cord rings into a bucket from a distance wh is not so easy as one wd imagine. At 6 we went home & left Idita at her home. Dressed & went to dine with Mme Hurtado at 7. Met Mrs & Miss Bronson, Genl. de Horsey who took me in, young Mr Curtis, Mr Gervase Ker & Mr Ames. In the evening a young Dr Facci came who has a splendid voice & he sang a great deal. He is as yet a student, tall dark good looking & a baritone. He is painfully nervous at singing & only towards the end of the eveng began to get over it. Mme Hurtado sang, I sang & Genl. de Horsey sang & we stayed till past 11.
