18 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 18th May [1883]. Idita came for me soon after 9 & took me out in the sandalo. It was fine but very hot. At 10.30 I returned found Sir Saml Baker with Henry. Read, practised guitar—wrote. After lunch Henry took the Symonds to Murano & I stayed at home– Wrote letters, read & worked. Henry returned after 6. We dined at 7 in the long hall. Just as we were finishing dinner a sudden crack of thunder startled us & Giovanni ran in to say he thought the lightening was coming into the house & that it ran like a serpent on the pantry table. The storm continued & there was a short hail storm with enormous stones wh rattled on the roof of the belvedere. There was no going out so we sat in the studio reading & playing cribbage till 10.30. There was rumbling accompt of thunder grumbling all the night till then & constant lightening.
