19 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 19th [May 1883]. The weather was still oppressive & threatened more storm. Andriana Marcello & Mrs Eden & also Idita came to see me before lunch. After lunch Henry & I went off to call on Lady Marian Alford & found her very unwell with headache. Andriana met us there. Henry went away & left me. Lady Marian read us the MS. of her chapter on lace for a book she is writing & we were able to give her some hints. Then Andriana & I went to call on Ninina Brandolin & found her at home & sat some time with her. She then left me at home. Ninina came to see me at 5 & then came Lady Sinclair & Miss St Clair & paid us a visitation. At last Mme & Idita Hurtado came but the Sinclairs remained telling their troubles to Henry & Miss St Clair wished to prove to him she must go off to Consple to try to get at Rustem P. It has really become a dreadful mania with her—& the poor old mother who looks gentle & ill is being sacrificed to it. I & Mme Hurtado tried some duetts & they all went away a few minutes before 7 when we had dinner. There was a fine moon & we went out after dinner & seeing lights in the Eden’s windows we went up to see them & met the Windischgratz’s, Ames &c & sat on the balcony with Mr Eden & got home at 10.30.
