28 May 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 28th May [1883]. The Bishop left us by 9.15 train. Got up to see him off. Breakfast 9. Directly after went out in sandalo with Idita. It rained. We went to S. Moisé to buy a ring for Maria & ordered one at Podio, walked to the Piazza. Idita took me to Lady Marian & she kept me there talking till 11 over the affair of Henry & Rome & was very nice & kind & tried to smooth away what the Pagets had done to us– She said she wanted to find out whether Henry wd be glad to have his pension & some good governorship & thought the Govt was anxious to give him one. She spoke strongly against Lord Granville as false & having promised & deceived every one all round & said she had long lost all faith in him. She was very sorry for the way Henry had been treated & promised to write to me. I came home—& potted out some geraniums & then came luncheon. Practised guitar & at 3 went to call on the Sinclairs who have moved to the Victoria Hotel. Found them at home & they talked again of Rustem. Said they were starting this week for Consple & asked that Henry should give them a letter for Rustem. I promised to ask him. I went to fetch him at the Stabto. Left some cards, went home. Mme Hurtado & Idita called & brought a Bss Oesterreicher to introduce to me (she is née Congreve). Mrs Bronson & Mr Horatio Brown also called. After dinner went to walk on the Piazza. Then Henry left me at the Brandolins & went on to Valmarana’s. I remained there till 11 when I went to join Henry & we came home at 11.30.
