11 June 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 11th June [1883]. Idita came & sat to me. Mrs Eden came & brought me some large white lilies wh are here called lilies of St Anthony of Padua. Miss Holles an Armenian girl came to bring me some embroidered d’oyleys I had ordered. She said the family was Armenian & had been ruined in the Russo Turkish war & obliged to come here & earn their livelihood. In afternoon Henry went out early. Lady Bagot came to see me– our gondola having been to the squero to be greased I could not get it before 5.30 & when at last it was ready I went off to fetch Henry at the Stabto & looked at the mosaics in the design of Walter Crane wh are being made for the Steuart Hodgson’s house in London– Came home to dinner. In evening we went to walk in the Piazza & came home early cribbage.
