23 June 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 23rd June [1883]. Idita sat to me in the morng but I did not work much as Mme de Bülow sat in the studio & then Css Brandolin came & brought her children. After lunch Henry took the de Bülows to Murano. Mme Hurtado’s gondola fetched me & I went to her to play over the hymn for tomorrow. I had a note from Miss Nina Hammond offering to join our singing. When I mentioned it to Mme Hurtado she was very offended & said she wd not sing with her– I had to smoothe her down & promised to find a civil way of putting her off. The Hammonds are very much disliked on account of their proselytising mania. At 4 I went to enquire after Miss Thesiger & found her quite well & pleased with Cini. Lord Kingsale (Mme Hurtado’s uncle) accompanied me to the Britannia– Went on to the Edens. Had tea there & went out with them; took a row round the Giudecca to see the outside of the garden Mr Eden wants to buy. He then left us at the Helicon where we had promised to be at 5. Met Henry & De Bülows there & a good many others. We were disappointed at getting no tea & soon went home. The Adl Lord John Hay & his Flag Lieut: Mr Thyritt came to dine with us. I did not get on with him very well. Mr Lister a young middy son of Mr Villiers Lister came to call & we asked him to stay & dine & sleep wh he did. Henry went out with the Adl to hear the serenade after dinner– The de Bülows, young Lister & I went in our own gondola. We rowed to where the Helicon was—& where the serenade began. The band played God save the Queen & the English sailors gave 3 cheers & burnt coloured lights– Then the band played the Italian national air & our men cheered again—after this the galleggiante continued down the Grand Canal with all manner of lights & illuminations. When they got opposite our house they stopped & played a piece. We landed & soon all retired to bed. The serenade was not one of the best.
