24 June 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 24th June [1883]. I went to church & played the harmonium. Mme Hurtado sang. We got off young Lister directly after breakfast as he had to return to his ship. I had rather a busy day writing invitations for a party for tomorrow evening. I went first to Css Valmarana to tell her of my intention as Monday is her night. I only found Bss Nitta & sent a message thro’ her. We took the de Bülows to walk in Malcolm’s garden. Lord John & Mr Winsloe dined with us. We took His Lordship to the Piazza afterwards & we walked up & down in the crowd listening to the music. It was very hot there. Abt 9 Henry & I went to Mrs Edens’ & found there Capt. Nicolson & Mme Acton. Capt. N. is the Commander of H.M.S. Temeraire. After a few minutes at the Edens we went on to the Hurtados where there was a party. Found Idita & her mother generally irate as none of the Fleet having gone to her nor Mrs Eden. We did not stay long. Cortelazzo arrived & dined & slept.
