26 June 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 26th June [1883]. The de Bulows left by an early train for Bohemia. Lunched early & I went off at 1:30 to make the trip to the Fleet. I called for Idita & took her also Miss Bronson. We went to the Approdo at the Hotel de Munich where I found all the party already assembled. The Pss of Montenegro & Pss Olga, Dss della Grazia & 2 girls, Mrs Eden, Ct Zeno, Ct Brandolin, Css Mocenigo of St Stae & girls, Css Zambert, Bss Marburg & Css Bombelle with each a girl, the Roubilant children, Css Marcello & Thea—2 nieces of Pss Dolgorouky, Css Gomar & a boy. Css Brandolin & the Valmaranas went with Adl Martini & his wife in the Baleno. It appeared the Adl Martini had determined not to go unless our Adl had dined with him last night. He had begun by refusing but ultimately went to the dinner. In an hour & 7 minutes we got to where our fleet was anchored & went first on board the Témeraire & had a charming reception from Capt. Nicholson. He told off his officers to arm the ladies abt & took me himself. After showing us over the ship wh was in proper order he gave us refreshments in his saloon & the band played– After remaining awhile we went to the “Alexandra” where the Italian Adl already was. Ld John Hay did not receive us over cordially altho he had invited us to tea & promised us dancing. I had the greatest difficulty in getting him to be presented to the ladies & the Pss of Montenegro was furious. We did have some tea & very desultory dancing—hardly any of the officers wd come up to dance. I made acquaintance with Capt. Rawson the Capt. of the Ship & brother of Mrs de Winton. We left abt 6.30 & returned as we came only as they brought us home by the outside of the Lido & there was a little swell several of the girls were sick. Henry had remained at home & had gone to meet Miss Canning at 4.17. She came to stay with us from Florence where she had been with the Dss of Sermoneta. I got home with Cortelazzo who had been to the Fleet also to his great delight—just at 8 & we sat down at once to dinner. Went out for a little row afterwards & then early to bed. Our steamer to the Fleet cost 80 fcs wh we subscribed amongst us.
