8 July 1883 — Vienna | |
Sunday. 8th July [1883]. Breakfast at 9 & drove to the Belvidere & went over the pictures again & saw the Dutch school there. We remained till nearly 1 & then walked back to the hotel for lunch. A storm of rain came on just then & cooled the air very much– We went also to the 2nd floor where there are some wonderful Dürers, Kranach & old German masters. We stayed in writing & reading all the afternoon & Henry began to teach me piquet. The papers arrived abt 5.30. At 6.30 the Drummonds called for us & we drove together to dine with the Elliots at Hadersdorf at Villa London which they have taken for the summer. It was a lovely drive thro’ the suburbs charming villas & gardens & passed Schönbrun the Emperor’s palace. It took us an hour to get to Hadersdorf. The London chateau is a house surrounded by a moat. Sir Henry, Lady Elliot, 2 Miss Elliot, Mr Conti the Spanish Minister, Mr Strong & Mr English secys made up the party. After dinner the gentlemen went in the garden to smoke. Mrs Drummond walked with Miss Elliot & I sat with our hostess. She told me Sir Henry E. was going to retire in the winter & that Lord Granville had almost forced him to do so & behaved as badly to him as he seems to do to every one else. She said she believed that the Pagets wd succeed them. We left at abt 10 & drove back to Vienna in a delightful cool eveng. | |
