10 July 1883 — Vienna
Tuesday. 10th July 1883. Directly after 9 o’cl breakfast we drove to see the Ambras Collection at the Lower Belvidere. Some fine armour but badly arranged & many very fine things especially some old embroidered vestments the best I have ever seen all squeezed into a small space. Drove on to the Imperial Arsenal—a very large building. The inside rather like the Alhambra overdone– Splendid armour—most beautifully kept & arranged– Then we went to the Schatzkammer a jewel treasure in the Imperial Palace. We saw here wonders in the way of vases of rock crystal, enamels, old jewels, plates, gems, the Crown jewels &c—enough fine things to turn ones head round & too numerous to mention. We then returned to the hotel. We lunched at 1 & just as we were finishing were accosted by our old friend the Persian Ambr at Consple Mohsin Khan. He was delighted to see us—is on his way from Consple to Marienbad & with his colleague the Persian Ambr here was breakfasting at this hotel. We brought them up to our room to have a talk. At 2 Mrs Drummond fetched us & we walked to the great china shop & spent an hour & 10 florins there & then walked back to the hotel & played piquet a little while. The Drummonds came at 7 to dine with us & we meant to have gone to the Volksgarten to hear Strauss’s band but a tremendous thunderstorm came on & prevented our moving out & after sitting waiting for some time in the hopes of its clearing we went up stairs & sat in our room & at 10.30 the D’s left us & went to bed.
