11 July 1883 — Vienna
Wednesday. 11th July 1883. We got up early, breakfasted at 7 & left Vienna by 8.15 train. Hill & Gio. went on to Dresden & Henry I stopped at Prague where we got abt 4. We had an excellent dinner served us in the train on a tray all filled up. When we got to Prague we walked from the station to the Blue Star & took rooms—deposited our luggage and had some coffee. We then took a carriage & drove around the town to the other side of the town on Kleinseite up the hill to the Hradschin. We got out & went into the Cathedral of St Weit which is more interesting outside than in. This part wh was destroyed in the time of the Hussites is being slowly rebuilt but at the rate it is now going will not be done for years. We went into the Palace to look at the view over the town which is lovely. We were shown round by an old guide who explained everything very well. He pointed out a church in the town (I forget which) which he said had belonged to the 3 different religions, “the Christian, the Hussite & the Evangelist & now it had returned to the Christian!” I asked him what was the Hussite religion & he said it was heathenish!! I suggested it might be Christian & also the Evangelist at wh the old man looked cunningly at me as not wishing to hurt my feelings he made no answer. The descent to the bridge by the winding road from the Hradschin was most charmg & picturesque—& would make a magnificent drawing. We returned to the hotel & dined at the Restaurant & then retired to our room & played cribbage till bed time.
