12 July 1883 — Prague | |
Thursday. 12th July [1883]. Got up at 8. Had breakfast & then walked out to look at the shops in the Graben. Returned to the hotel & took a carriage to go & see the sights. Went first to the Bohemian Museum where we found some Hussite arms & books & MSS & thence we went to look for the Picture gallery wh according to Murray was in the Bremita gasse– We found it had been moved to the Kleinseite. An interesting collection of Hollar’s engravings chiefly of England & English costumes– A lot of old German quaint pictures, a fair Gossart from the high altar in the cathedral—badly arranged in a rambling old house. We drove back to the Teynkirche & got in to it. A very fine church but nothing particular in it worthy of notice. Then back to the hotel & lunched. Took a last stroll in the town & then at 3 went off to the station & took the 4.9 train to Dresden which we reached at 8. Giov: met us at the station & we went to Hotel Bellevue. Had some supper on the terrace overlooking the Elbe where we could hear the band playing & went early to bed. | |
