13 July 1883 — Dresden | |
Friday. 13th [July 1883]. We walked to the picture gallery which was in the square close to our hotel. We asked to see the Director Herr who was very kind & took us round the gallery showing us the most interesting things. He is a new director & found great fault with the purchases & arrangements of his predecessor. He seemed very well pleased with himself & satisfied that he was well informed. He spoke of Morelli’s judgments with respect mingled with much contempt. We went for a moment in to see the great Raphael but being a free day there was such a crowd we could hardly get into the room. We returned to the hotel at 1 & got some soup & then I went to our room & rested while Henry returned to the gallery. A tremendous thunderstorm came on & cleared the air a little. We dined at the table d’hôte at 4.30 & afterwards we took a carriage & had a drive on the other side of the Elbe round by the new barracks outside the town– Coming back we were caught in heavy rain & had to have the carriage shut. Played cribbage & had tea at 9.30. | |
