14 July 1883 — Dresden
Saturday. 14th July [1883]. A wet day & much cooler. We spent the morning in the gallery. Much impressed with the Italian pictures. A fine Venus by Giorgone—called a copy of Sassoferrato in catalogue. A Venus by Guido & one by Palma Vecchio. A lovely portrait of a woman in white by Titian & a Holy Family by ditto. Fine Spanish pictures—also Dutch by Franz Hals. Van der Meer in fact more than one can remember. We went back to the hotel & got our gouter & afterwards as it cleared a little we went to buy the china figures Mrs Drummond had commissioned me to choose. I selected 6 figures of cupids at 14 marks each & had them sent to Vienna to her by post– We then returned to the hotel as it began to rain. Dined at 4.30 & met Mr & Mrs Mallet & son & girl at the table d’hôte. French Protestants & he has to do with the Ottoman bank. At 7 we went to the opera & heard Die lustige Weiber von Windsor music by Nicolai very well acted & sung. Prima donna Fraulein v. Weber a very pretty fresh voice & good actress. Home by 9.30. Had tea–
