15 July 1883 — Dresden
Sunday. 15th July [1883]. Went out after breakfast to the Gallery & finding it did not open till 11 we took a walk in the ramparts round by the Belvidere & the terrace of Bruhl & got back to the R.C. Church abt ¼ 11. We went in to hear the musical mass which was very fine. The church is all seated– The men are made to sit on one side, the women the other. Service lasted an hour—very quiet & orderly & a fat beadle in court uniform went abt keeping order. From there we went to the Gallery to see the pastels. There are 3 fine Liotards– Portrait of himself—the Belle Chocolatièra & a dancer. Some good Rosalbas. Went up to see Canatelli’s once more—also some interesting portraits of Giaff a Dresden artist of last century. Back to the hotel to lunch. It was very cold & rainy. At 3 we went out to see what was going on in the town. We found it was a great fête day called a Kriegsfeste & all the reserves & volunteers had come up from the country & marched in procession past the King’s balcony saluting & cheering him. They carried banners & flags & some were got up in the old costumes of the last century. It lasted abt an hour—& just as it was over the rain came down, as there was rather a crush, Henry stuffed me into a little hut close by & then we hastened home to the hotel. Dined at 4.30. Henry went to the Opera at 7. I remained at home. Wrote letters.
