12 August 1883 — Longarone
Sunday. 12th [August 1883]. Henry & I breakfasted in our room & I only went down late having clothes to arrange & prepare &c &c. The agents wife was very civil in assisting me. We lunched at 12 & then I wrote letters. It was hot & cd not go out in the day. At 5 we had some tea & then we went out with Mr Malcolm to see the new works he has built to keep in the river and make himself a harbour. The walls he has built there are wonderfully strong & seems as if they would last for ages. He showed us the devastation caused by last years inundations. The place where the garden & road were is one vast lake. There was an enormous landslip & the river was so undermining its banks that the town of Longarone was threatened. We met one of the worthys of the town walking with his wife & on expressing our surprise at Malcolms work he said it was “veramente governamentale”! We dined at 7. To bed early & packed for an early start tomorrow.
