13 August 1883 — Longarone
Monday. 13th [August 1883]. We started this morning in Mr Malcolm’s carriage with his horses & he accompanying us for an hour in the mountains at 8 o’cl. We stopped for our letters in the town & Malcolm there found news that poor old Rawdon Brown had been taken with a paralytic stroke & was very ill. We drove down to Belluno & on to Feltre where we stopped a couple of hours & lunched. Then on we went again up into the mountains by a most beautiful new road in a splendid gorge to Primiero which is in a plain surrounded by mountains. We slept at the Aquila Nera. We fd a very decent room with 2 beds prepared & Malcolm got a small one at the top of the house. But we had to regret an invasion of members of the Alpine Club who passed the night also here. They came from Trento & 18 of them came to Primiero. In order to avoid them we all dined upstairs in our bedroom & went early to bed—but much sleep was not to be got as the Alpinists were young & lively & they talked, smoked, sang, laughed, danced & had some musicians to play to them till past 10. Somewhere abt 3 in the morning they were bestirring again & off on their climbing expedition– With all this we slept little & were up early & off on our journey.
