14 August 1883 — Primiero
Tuesday. 14th August [1883]. We had a lovely day & a beautiful drive by the valley of the Cesnione to S. Martino di Castrozza amid the high mountains & the most fantastic shaped Dolomites. We stopped a few minutes at S. Martino to take a cup of coffee & there we met Signor & Signora Memmo of Venice. I saw a solitary old English lady sitting sunning herself by the road side so I crossed from the inn & entered into a conversation with her. She said she lived at Rome & I found out afterwards she was Mrs Hemans daughter in law of the Poetess. From S. Martino to Paneveggio we had a splendid journey over the pass of the Costonzella with splendid & ever varying view of the great Dolomite Cimon della Pala wh is over 10,000 ft high. At the top of the pass we got out of the carriage & Mr Malcolm showed me where to find Edelweiss which I now picked for the first time myself. We soon went down to Paneveggio where there was a nice little inn & we found Mr Horatio Brown & his old mother were staying there. She welcomed me with a hearty embrace—& took me to see her room—all made of wood & looked clean & comfortable. Mr Malcolm was heartily welcomed by the owners of the inn & the smiling maid “Virginia” whom he said he had known since she was a child & who is now going to be married & therefore confesses to being 27. We had excellent blue trout—good coffee & veal schnitzeln & after resting a while took leave of the Browns, bid adieu to Cimon de Pala & went on down the mountain to Predazzo wh look us abt 2 hours. It was abt 5 when we got to the “Nave d’Oro.” We ordered our dinner & then went out for a walk & stood watching some men in the Piazza playing Ballone. Malcolm went off to visit one of his saw mills. We watched the sun set light on the dolomites up the valley & at 7 we had a tea dinner & then retired. Cribbage.
