15 August 1883 — Predazzo
Wednesday. 15th August [1883]. The trumpets of the soldiers & the church bells woke Henry early but I slept thro’ it all & only got up at 7. Breakfast at 8 & then started for Cavalese, got there 10.30. We found it was the Ascension of the Virgin & therefore a great fête. We went to the “Uva” a quaint old inn close to the old Bishop’s Palace. We ordered lunch & then strolled out & went up to the church on the height very picturesquely situated & surrounded by grove of fine elm trees under wh in the time of the Republic of                the meetings of the Parliament were held. The big stone with its circle of stone seats round is still preserved where the people sat. A great procession came out of the church while we were there & it was a picturesque sight to see it winding down the hill to the town. There were banners carried & school children dressed up—& a crucifix wh no one noticed as it was followed by what was far more attractive to the crowd a wooden figure of the Madonna with extended arms & painted in the brightest colours. Everyone went down on their knees as it passed & it was painful to see such superstition. We kept back & afterwards went into the church wh is old with a fine door way wh had been spoilt by a porch built from it. The side aisles were most curious the arches of the roof being squeezed up to fit the narrowness of the aisle. We returned to the hotel & breakfasted very well & then read for a couple of hours & at abt 3 we set off for Neumarkt wh we reached in abt 1½ hour. There we left the carriage & took the train for Trent. All along our route Mr Malcolm had had telegrams about Mr Rawdon Brown—the reports were so bad that he determined to go straight back to Venice tonight. He dined with us & then went off by train to Verona & was to reach Venice at 5 tomorrow morng. We went to hotel Trent. Very civil intelligent landlord & we were very comfortable. Cribbage. Wrote letters—bed– Thunderstorm–
