16 August 1883 — Trent
Thursday. 16th August [1883]. Got up early & started at 8 in a carriage of the hotel to drive to Riva. The weather seemed unsettled & before we reached Riva a thunderstorm came on & hail so that we had to take refuge under a portico. It cleared a little & we went on. Went to the “Sole” a very old fashioned inn. Dined at 1 ocl at the table d’hôte. There were 2 German ladies & man whose nationality we could not tell as he never spoke. It cleared up & the sun shone brilliantly so that we saw the lake to advantage. Took a little walk in the town & at 3 we were provided with another carriage & fresh horses to take us to Rovereto. It was very fine & we had a beautiful drive. We should have gone to Mori wh is somewhat nearer than Rovereto but we found the bridge of the carriage road to Mori station had been carried away by the torrent. We drove to the “Olevo” where the man rested his horses & we took a walk to look at the curious old town of the “Podesta”—went & had a café & then our carriage took us to the station by 6.40 & we returned by train to Trent. Dined—cribbage.
