17 August 1883 — Trent | |
Friday. 17th [August 1883]. At 8 o’clock we started in Mr Malcolm’s carriage & had a lovely drive up to Pergine by the Val Sugana to Borgo where we stopped to lunch. We passed 2 villages wh had been devastated by the torrent & in one we found the houses buried up to the first floor by the debris. The “Angelo” at Borgo is a most primitive inn. We had lunch in the garden & good light beer & were amused watching a party of Italians who were also dining there en route for the baths of Levico. To Borgo from Trento was 23 miles & we went on to Bassano another 36 miles. We got there abt 6 in the evening & went to “Il Mundo” where we got a very good room & food very eatable. We were served by the master of the hotel a little bustling man in a black silk cap. We played cribbage till bed time. | |
