18 August 1883 — Bassano
Saturday. 18th [August 1883]. Got up at 7, breakfasted & at 9 set off in a little one horse shay to drive to Delle Nova to see the faience factory of Signor Antonibon. We were kindly received by the old gentleman, his son & grandson who are all in the business. They showed us all over the works—they have a few old things to compare with the new. We bought a bowl to give to Mr Malcolm & we returned to the town & went to the Museum where the Abbate in charge showed us over. Much interested in the collection of the Pictures by the Da Ponte family– There are also all the relics of Canova bequeathed by his brother the Bishop. His drawings, his casts &c &c. There are many other old drawings & good old prints. Returned to the “Mondo” & had lunch & then went to the station to go by 2.30 train to Padua. When we got to Cittadella we found we might have gone from there to Treviso & reached Venice at 5.40 but we were booked for Padua & cd not change. We got to Padua 4.15 & took a carriage & drove to see the “Santo” & the “Eremitani” with its fine frescoes of Guariente & Mantegna—then back to the station 7 got some coffee before starting by 6.40 for Venice. The train was late & we got to Venice abt 8. Mr Malcolm met us & took us home in his gondola– Dined—& bed.
