19 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 19th August [1883]. Wrote letters all the morning & unpacked. Mr Malcolm took Henry to see poor Mr R. Brown & Henry said it was sad to see. His mouth seemed paralysed & he cd not shut it. He seemed to know Henry. At 5 Ersilia Canevaro & Mlle Cozzi came to see us & also Mme Bassecourt. They came up to my studio. A discussion arose on religious subjects. Mme Bassecourt a staunch protestant had just allowed her boy to be confirmed an R.C. after his father’s religion & explained that it had been a trial to her. Ersilia said she approved & declared herself to be a very staunch R.C. & to have a special adoration for the Virgin. She said she had an image of the Virgin from wh she wd not be separated for one night. Mlle Cozzi seemed much less fervent & Ersilia acknowledged herself to be a bigot. She has a fine southern nature. Mr Malcolm dined with us at 7 & we went afterwards to the Piazza—the band was playing & it was hot & stuffy so we determined to take a row– Just as we left the Piazza we met Palmaroli & his son & they promised to come to see us tomorrow at 3. Palmaroli is now director of the Spanish Academy at Rome. Took a row—a beautiful moonlight cool night. Home at 10.30.
