20 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 20th August [1883]. Wrote all day long arrears of letters &c. At 3 visit from Palmaroli, his wife & son & nephew, a son of my old master Esquivel. They stayed sometime talking & Mme P. talked a great deal about Spain. She gave a very bad report of the King who has treated the Queen very badly. It appears she suspected the King of being unfaithful to her & one day she followed him to the Casa de Campo & caught him with a lady– A violent scene took place in wh H.M. struck his wife! The poor woman left Spain with her two children but had of course to return & bear it. The Duke de Sesto, himself a very mauvais sujet has done his best to corrupt the King & has entirely succeeded. It is the Duke who undertakes to provide amusement for H.M. Henry went to see Rawdon Brown whom he found somewhat better. Dinner at 7 & then went on the Piazza—a beautiful moonlit night. Cribbage & bed at 11.
