25 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 25th [August 1883]. There was a storm in the night but it is still very hot today. Painted all morng. Mrs Ross went to the Lido. Palmaroli came to luncheon & then Henry took him out sight seeing & when he came in to tea at 5 he told me he had been to see poor Rawdon Brown and he found him actually dying & evidently with a very short time to live. We were all much concerned. After dinner we went out to the Giardinetto & saw from there the fireworks of the Fête given at the Lido in aid of the Casamicciola sufferers. We came home abt 10 and Giovanni met us at the door with the news that poor Rawdon Brown died at 9 this evening quietly & without a struggle. Bentinck & Mr Malcolm have both been telegraphed for. Poor old Rawdon Brown had been here 51 years. His old gondolier Toni had been with him 32 years and as he had known people of the last century he was a link between Venice of the Republic & Venice of the Present. Many people were fond of him for altho he was peculiar & had many dislikes, where he liked he was kind and hospitable & hid a kind heart under a gruff manner.
