27 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 27th [August 1883]. Very hot day. After breakfast Mrs Ross & I went out for a walk. We went across to S. Benedetto traghetto & thence walked to the Piazza, shopped & went back by 12 o’cl. when we lunched and then at 12.30 M. & Mme Palmaroli, their son, & nephew (young Esquivel) & Mme Vessieux & her son arrived & we set off two boatloads for Murano. I went with Mme Vessieux & the 3 boys & when we got to Murano we got out at the church to see the Bellini & then I changed with Mrs Ross & went with the Palmaroli & Henry. We went on to Burano & went to see the lace schools—& then from there we went on to Torcello, landed & I set to work at once to make the coffee while the others went over the cathedral &c. I had it all ready for them when they came & we sat in the grass & enjoyed the pleasant view & the cool of the evening. There was also a party of girls from Burano & Venice with whom we talked & to whom we gave the remains of our coffee. We had excellent figs & good fresh milk. Coming home our gondola went much better & quicker than the others in spite of their having up a sail & we got home ½ hour sooner than them. It was just 7 when we got in– Mr Malcolm dined with us & we went to bed early.
