28 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 28th August [1883]. We breakfasted at 8 and Henry went to poor Mr Brown’s funeral. I painted all the morning. After luncheon painted till 4. Had tea & then rowed to the Armenian Convent. We found they had had a great fire during our absence & they were rebuilding a good deal of it. They kindly gave me 2 plants—an oleander & an ornamental zucco which we carried off in the gondola & came home to dinner. In the evening we went off to hear the Pittori sing in the Canal. When I was going to dress for dinner Hill clutched at the chair & said she was giddy & had been so since yesterday & that Giovanni had sent for a Dr & he had come this morning. When I went in to see how she was on my way to bed I met the Dr who did not seem to know what to give her—& said she must have quinine tomorrow.
