29 August 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 29th [August 1883]. I painted all the morning. Mr Malcolm cane to bid us good bye as he returns to Botzen today. It seems there is much confusion about poor Brown’s will. He has left Mr Bentinck most of his morning & nothing to poor Toni or very little. Bentinck has written some unpleasant letters both to Henry & Malcolm & neither will have anything to do with the matter & have handed over all to the English Consul to seal up till B chooses to come & see to it. He is at Aix les Bains & says he will come in 3 weeks. Planetiet came to show us the earthenware pots he is making me & we promised to go to his fabrique today or tomorrow. I was making some cigarettes after lunch when Palmaroli came to go out with us. I was going out to see Css Pisani & we were going out all together in the gondola when Palmaroli slipped on the step wh was covered with lime & down he went into the water. He was hauled out & Giov. took him upstairs to give him dry garments. I went off & called on Mme Pisani & sent back the gondola & eventually we all met at Guggenheims. We went on to the church of S. Gervais & Protais to see an altar by Donatello then on to the Gesuati to see the Tiepolo ceiling & a lovely picture of Stas Anna Catarina & another. We were leaving cards on Mrs Bracken when from a gondola passing we came onto Sir Henry Thompson & his son. They promised to come & dine tomorrow. Went out in gondola. Hill a little better.
