1 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 1st September [1883]. Hill not being much better I sent for Dr Cini & he pronounced Hill’s illness to be a kind of malaria which is frequent at this time of year in this scirocco heat. Mrs Ross went out in the morning & met Palmaroli who said that the reason why he did not come to lunch yesterday was that their french friend M. Vessieux had been taken very ill with heart complaint & he had not been able to leave him. It was a fearfully hot day & a strong scirocco. Mrs Ross & Henry went out after lunch & returned to tea & then we all 3 went off to Casa Kirsch where the Palmaroli’s are staying & offered them any help they might want for their sick friend. Cortelazzo turned up today to stay with us. We got back home from Palmarolis just as a storm came on—there was a little rain & a good deal of lightening. Sir Henry & Mr Thompson came & dined with us. Sir Henry went up to see Hill & thought her going on well. Cini came again & ordered her quinine for tomorrow. We could not go out in the evening on acct of the storm.
