2 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 2nd September [1883]. Packed to start for Longarone today. Made cigarettes for Henry; talked to Cortelazzo. Gave warning to Betta the cook as Giov: & she quarrel & gave him over the entire management of every thing. Mrs Ross left by 12.50 train for S. Marcello in the Appenines. We lunched at 1 & then started by 2.15 train for Vittorio. We found the train full of French people of all sorts, priests &c going to Gorizia for the Comte de Chambord’s funeral wh is to be tomorrow & 2 trains started almost together. It was still very hot & stormy. We changed carriages at Conegliano. Sir Henry Thompson & his son accompanied us & joined us at Venice station. A little after 4 we reached Vittorio where we found Mr Malcolm’s carriage & break ready waiting for us & his good coachman the faithful Joseph. We put Giovanni & the luggage in the break & went & got some coffee at the Café opposite the station & then drove off. It was nearly dark before we got to the lake of Sta Croce & soon after it began to rain & we were in the midst of a thunderstorm & it was quite dark when we got to La Punta abt 8.30. We were all glad to get an excellent dinner wh we found ready for us & went early to bed.
