3 September 1883 — La Punta, Longarone
Monday. 3rd [September 1883]. Breakfast at 9. & directly after we ordered a small carriage to drive to Forni di Zoldo. We walked in to Longarone to meet our trap wh turned out to be a very humble one with a rather lively driver & a lame white horse. Henry & I & Mr Thompson went—Sir Henry T. preferred to remain & rest at home. We started abt 10 & in the village we met Signor Pucci the singing master & learned that there was to be an opera given at Longarone on Thursday & wh had been composed by a young man of the place—that the operetta was called “Tommaso il gobbo” & that Pucci & his daughter wd both sing in it. We had a lovely drive & our lame horse got on better than might have been expected. Our driver expended a great deal of energy in trying to persuade us that his horse tho’ he did not look much was very good & very sure—that he was a “berichino”—artful & pretended to be lame & that on such a dangerous road as that of Zoldo he preferred driving him to any other. It was a lovely day & we had a lovely drive. The Serra & the Rocchetta were clear & the outlines hard against the blue sky. The Pelmo was not quite clear– We found our friend Mr Cercena & his wife Lynora Nina in their new hotel & they soon prepared us a lunch—excellent minestrone—a fransolino & fried celleras. After being well refreshed we drove back to La Punta & got there abt 6. It took us 3½ hours going & 3 hours returning. Cribbage with Henry.
