4 September 1883 — La Punta, Longarone
Tuesday. 4th September 1883. We breakfasted at 8 & as soon as the post was in we set off in Malcolm carriage to drive to Previ di Cadore. Fine day & in 2½ hours we reached Tai. There we stopped at the inn & ordered our breakfast & then went on to Cadore. Went into the church to see the Titian & then he & I both went to draw Titians house so as to have a little recollection of it wh we did in abt ¼ hour. Drove back to Tai & had good lunch of minestrone & chicken. Sir Henry taught me what was the “pope’s nose” & “the oyster” in the chicken & carved them most systematically. After lunch we drove on the road to Cortina till we came to where we had a view of Antelas & of Pelmo—unfortunately their peaks were not quite clear. We stopped some time to give them a chance of clearing up & at last had to turn back & give it up. At Tai we stopped & had tea & then drove back to Longarone wh we reached at 6. Dinner at 7. & cribbage in eveng. In the night there was a thunderstorm.
