14 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 14th September [1883]. Alice & Margie went to St Marks in the morning. I painted & looked after pots & flowers & I again painted after lunch till 3—when we all got ready to go to the Lido. It was a dull day but not actually raining. I went in the Stab gondola with Mr Rate. Henry took Alice & Margie. When we got to Lido at 4 Fontane it looked so threatening that we did not have our tea on the shore as we had intended but we hastened home. Mrs Rate called me to the front door & we occupied ourselves with gardening till dinner. Mr Rate came out & sat at the door while we were at work. After dinner it rained hard– Henry took out Margie & her father. Alice & I soon went to our rooms. On Henrys return we played cribbage.
