20 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 20th September [1883]. Gardened in the morning. Painted a little till lunch. Henry took Mr Rate & the Dicksons to Murano & I painted again & Alice sat with me till tea time. After tea she & I & Margie went out in gondola round by the Giudecca to the Brazzoduro garden there & we bought some more plants wh Alice gave me & then we got home shortly before dinner. Today being the anniversary of the battle of the Alma we had Genl. de Horsey to dinner & drank to the health of the heroes of the day & those who had been present. As Sir C. Dickson had been the hero Genl. de Horsey had also been in the battle & Henry had been there as spectator there was much talk over it all. After dinner they all went out but Lady Dickson, Genl. de Horsey & I & we sat & talked & then we got out the guitar & he & I sang Spanish songs. The Genl. plays very well with the real Spanish “scratch.”
