21 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 21st [September 1883]. Helped the Rates to pack. I had another talk with Hill who has suddenly entirely recovered her health & I asked whether if that was the case she still really wished to return to England. She said she was quite well but she thought she preferred to go & wished to go at once. I told her to think it over & I would ask her again in the eveng. At 11.20 Alice & Margie Rate, Lady Dickson & I started off to join Henry & Mr Rate at the Stabto & we went to St Marks and in to see the Treasury wh was open. Henry especially pointed out the old vase with the Assyrian cuniform & Egyptian inscription. Mrs Rate went on with Margie to be photod & the rest of us went home to lunch. After lunch Alice & I went up to the studio & scrubbed & arranged all the bird cages wh took us till tea time. After tea I wrote letters & then helped Alice to pack & while dressing for dinner I asked Hill’s last wishes she said “she cd not submit to the chance of being given notice to a 3rd time” & wd prefer to leave on Tuesday or Wedy next wh I said she might do & today is the day 16 years since she came to my service. Thus she chose to break a long chain. Her nerves have evidently broken down & her hatred of Venice she cannot surmount. I daresay it will be the best in the end. After dinner Henry took out Mr Rate & the Genl. I made Alice lie down & sleep for an hour & sat talking to Lady Dickson & Margie. Mr Castellani came to accompany the Rates to the station & then left for Baveno by 11.25 train & we went to bed. Sigr Richeri came to take the Genl. to see over the arsenal today wh pleased him very much.
