6 October 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 6th October [1883]. Henry & I went by the 9.30 train to spend the day with Css Marcello at Mogliano. She met us at the station & took us to her house. We walked in the garden with her. We found a Signor dall’occa staying there a young rising artist– Also Mr Pinkerton an English gentleman who gives english lessons. We lunched at 12 & then I played lawn tennis a bit & Henry, Andriana, Pino Marcello & Conte Luigi Michiel, who came to spend a few hours, played dominoes out of doors. At 3 we went for a drive to to see a picture by Palma Vecchio lately unfortunately restored by M. Botti of Venice. We saw the house wh had once been inhabited by P. Veronese close to the church. On the house there are remains of frescoes by him—but much repainted. From there I drove the poney carriage with Pino & Geppino in it; we went to the station to leave Ct Michiel & then back to Mogliano. Had tea & sat & talked. Css Marcello recommended me a maid the sister of her own & I arranged for her to come from Trent where she is, to see me. We dined at 7 & at 8.30 we drove to the station accompanied by Pino. Our train was ½ hour late & when we arrived at Venice we found no gondola. On getting home in a hired one we found they had been to the station & came home fancying the train was in. Had tea & went to bed. Had windows put in the Belvidere.
