8 October 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 8th October [1883]. Miss Holas came & was tremendously disappointed when she heard that I had not been able to do anything for her. She sang to me & had a fine voice & is a good musician. Lunched at 1 & at 2 Henry & I went in gondola to the H. Europa to call on Lady Brett & bid her & Sir Baliol good bye. Then on to the Stabto to meet the Miss Monks & show them the mosaics. Afterwards to Rawdon Brown’s old apartment to look at what was left for sale. Toni told us he would sell us what we wanted at reasonable prices and we saw Mr Bentinck who came in while we were there. We agreed to return on Wedy to settle finally. I called on Miss Gordon & found her at home. She said she was not so well & her nurse obstinately sat in the room all the while. Went home—had tea & wrote. At lunch time we had a telegram from M. & Mme d’Adda to say they accepted our invitation to come & dine & sleep here. Tomorrow they go on to S. Cassiano to stay with their daughter Css Brandolin. We sent Giov: & the gondola to fetched them at 7.30 when the Milan train comes in. They arrived at this house abt 8 & we soon got dinner. Just as we sat down Ersilia Canevaro knocked at the door to our astonishment. She sat with us during dinner & spent the eveng. Henry & the d’Adda’s played cards.
