10 October 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 10th October [1883]. Arranged all my things & packed box to go to Florence tomorrow. Miss Holas called– Also the Misses Monk who came to bid us adieu as they leave tomorrow. Henry went out directly after lunch & I remained in & finished packing. This morning Miss Bronson came & played over the hymns for Sunday as she has consented to take my place at the organ during my absence. While I was putting things in order in walked Cortelazzo who had arrived from Vicenza to stay with us– At once began explanations of our domestic troubles—Hill’s sudden departure and Giovanni’s determination to do the same. We talked for over an hour & I could not help crying at the same time. At 5 Henry came in and said Sir John & Lady de Gex had called & that we must invite them to dine tonight. We did so & they came. They had arrived yesterday here they said.
