19 October 1883 — Florence
Friday. 19th October [1883]. We packed all our things– Left some boxes with the landlord to keep till we return—one to go to Castagnolo to meet us & took our night bags with us. We lunched at 11 & went by 12.40 train to Sienna. There was a scirocco blowing & we were glad to get out of Florence. The afternoon was fine. Sitting opposite the open windows in the railway carriage I got some dust in my eyes and they got very painful. We got to Sienna about 4.30 & took a little carriage up from the station to the Grand Hotel de Sienna & engaged our rooms– We found a civil Landlady an Englishwoman. We sallied forth at once to walk in the town & by the curious up & down narrow streets we walked to the Duomo & went in first to the Baptistry. We went into the cathedral also & it was very grand in the gathering darkness & we looked & the splendid façade & resolved to come early tomorrow to look at it. We walked then round by some other streets & the Piazza & looked at the outside of the Palazzo Publico & back to the Hotel. Dined at the table d’hôte at 6.30—there was a talkative English man, 4 american ladies & a German couple. We played cribbage in our room till bed time.
