3 November 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 3rd [November 1883]. Studied Italian—wrote &c. Choir practise after lunch but before that had a visit from Malcolm who has just returned to Venice. Mrs & Miss Cremer, Mrs Brown, Miss Ker & Miss Bronson came to the practise. We tried over the chaunts as we intend to have chaunts for the first time tomorrow at the service. Henry went out & sent the gondola back for me. I went to fetch him at the Stabto & then we came straight home. Ersilia Canevaro & her sister came to tea & after that Olga Mocenigo came & said her little Valentine was ill in bed with threatening of croup. We went to dine with Mrs Bronson—there were the Brownings & Miss Ker there. After dinner the girls played 2 guitars. Browning wrote me some verses with a crow quill so small I could hardly read them. We all went at 10 to Mrs Curtis’ who receives on Saturdays & it was her 30th wedding day. A very few people there. Pss Melanie Metternich was there very élégante & amiable & the American ladies delighted with her– We came home by 11.
