25 November 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 25th November [1883]. I went to the Italie & fetched Emily R. to go to church. I played but I found that it was very difficult as there was something wrong abt it & I had to play all in the treble clef– Just as we got to the last hymn I found a book had been put on the notes & when taken off all went quite right! I took Mrs Eden to her home & then took Emily to the Monaco Hotel to try & find her a nice room but was not successful & left her at the Italie. Home to lunch. At 2 Henry, Mr Burton & I went off to the Eden’s new garden on the Giudecca. We found them there. They have a nice little house—but the garden was in great disorder. The vines falling and there will be a great deal to be done. We got home at 3.30 & sent Giovanni in the gondola to one Signor Leopoldo Orsi who came to stay with us. Had tea at 5. At 6.30 Henry & I went off in gondola to the Chiesa Evangelica where we met the Brownings. It is held in a fine Palazzo near the Sta Maria Formosa. The Conferenza (for it was not a service) began by a prayer, then a hymn was sung & then the minister (who was in plain clothes) addressed us in a most eloquent manner for nearly ¾ hour his subject being the Decadenza del Papata. He proved it historically & then concluded by saying the Evangelica Church would last & never decay as it was the true one. Returned home & brought the Brownings & dined at 8.30 & afterwards I played the harmonium to them all till bed time.
