29 November 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 29th November [1883]. Olga came & sat to me & I went on with her bust—but we had to waste some time as the men were putting down a matting under the carpet so I played & sang to her while we were waiting. Emily R. came to lunch with us & afterwards we took her out with us to the Stabto & showed her all over it & then I took her home to the Hotel d’Italie & she moves today to the Hotel de Munich. Having heard that last night after sunset there were curious luminous appearances in the sky we looked out for it– The sun set the deepest colour red I ever saw & then it became quite dark—then the sky began to light up again in a brilliant pinky light spreading upwards in the West & became brighter & then gradually diminished. Henry, Signor Orsi & I rushed up to the top of the house to see it. After tea Signor Orsi & I practised some songs & I taught him one. Countess Canevaro came & dined with us & in the evening she sang & so did Sr Orsi & accompanied himself to the guitar. Lady E. Campbell & the Miss Bullers came in the evening to hear the music & to have tea. The Misses B. were more silent & stiff than ever.
