19 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 19th December [1883]. Rather an idle morning– Practised guitar. Made up my dinner book wh had not been posted up for a year– After lunch Henry went out in gondola & sent it back for me. The gardener came & I settled abt my plants &c & then went to Ersilia Canevaro. The sarta met me there & arranged abt doing up an evening dress for me. Then Ersilia sang splendidly a new piece of music by Rubinstein called Hecuba & Signor Trombini accompanied her & I sat by & listened & enjoyed it. At 4 we had tea & then Ersilia & I went out together to pay some official visits as it was Olga Mocenigo’s day. We found a lot of Austrians calling & I was introduced to several of them & it was highly solemn & strange to be paying her a formal visit. It was also the Dss of Noci’s day so we went on to her & then we fell like a bomb into the midst of a cosy party of people amongst them HRH Don Carlos—all smoking ladies & all. We felt that we had come at an ill chosen moment but we sat & talked a while & then made our escape. I left Ersilia at home & then went home. Miss Lyall came to tea & stayed some time. She leaves for Florence tomorrow & does not return here. After dinner we called for Olga & took her to the Edens– Frontali & Mme Pilat played violin & piano duetts. Pss Dolgorouky was there– We had a very pleasant evening.
