22 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 22nd December [1883]. I spent the whole morning writing letters for Christmas to friends in England. After lunch I went out with Henry to walk in the Piazza & we bought more Christmas cards & on the way home went to enquire how Carry Eden was. I found she was worse & I was not allowed to see her—but I saw the maid Susanne & she said the Dr said she must be kept very quiet. Mr Eden was gone to his garden so we followed him there to hear what he thought & he said the Dr thought she was in for an illness. We promised to go & sit with him a while in the evening & so we did. On the way home I went to see Ersilia who was not well– We played duetts on the piano together– Emily R came to tea also Mr Horatio Brown– Emily stayed on to dinner & we sent her on in our gondola when we went to Mr Edens. Henry & he played cribbage. Home early.
