25 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. [25th December 1883]. Christmas Day. I went to church & had to play the harmonium Miss Bronson not being well. After I got home I went off again to see the Canevaros in the hope of learning how to make punch for this evening but they were all out so I went back to lunch. I spent all the afternoon in arranging the table for dinner & putting on the flowers & had only just finished by 5 o’cl tea time. Then I had to arrange my diamonds to wear & had a hunt for the key wh was mislaid & finally found in Henry’s drawer & then I dressed for dinner. Mrs Bronson & Edith B., Mr & Mrs Inglis Palgrave, Mr Malcolm, Mr Pinkerton, Mr Horatio Brown & his mother, & their friend Mr C. Batten & Emily Reitzenstein dined with us & the whole affair went very well considering that it was the first party we had given with new servants. In the evening several more English & Americans came—also Olga Mocenigo who looked very sweet & pretty in black velvet. The American Consul & his wife Mr & Mrs Noyes, Genl. & Mrs Lane, the French Consul & his wife M. & Mme Mimaut &c &c. We gave hot punch & tea &c besides a splendid Christmas cake given us by Mr Malcolm who sent over to his house for it after dinner. Abt 12 every one went away.
