27 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 27th December [1883]. Busy all morning tearing up & putting away letters. At 12 the dressmaker came & Ersilia Canevaro came to arrange about my black lace dress which is being rearranged. Directly after lunch I went out with Henry to go over the Cotonificio on the Giudecca which is a very fine building & very interesting. They have a few English there superintending. One man we met told us with tears in his eyes he had had bad news from home. He had only been here 11 weeks & had just heard that his mother had been found dead in her bed. I was very sorry for him being away from all his friends.
