3 January 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 3rd January [1884]. Got up early– Breakfast at 8 & went by 9.15 train to Vicenza. We got there at 11. Cortelazzo met us with his carriage & small horses. We went to the Hotel de Rome, ordered some lunch & then went on foot to Sta Corona to see the Montagna & Bellini & then on to see the fine Palma Vecchio, on to Cortelazzo’s house to see his works—the scissors he is making for the C. Pss of Germany to give to our Queen. We went to the hotel to lunch & then back to C’s house & he took us out with his horses to the villino he has bought in the country a little way out of the town. We found a pleasant little house with an absurd tower round on all sides but one! It has some stone figures wh are not bad on the facade of the house but are meant for a much larger place. He took us all over it with pride. He showed us where he is going to put in the centre Henrys & his own statue with the words “L’artista e il mecenate.” We then drove back to the town. The villa is past Monte Iberico on the plain & there was a church of Sta Croce attached to it wh Cortelazzo has pulled down. On our return to the town went for a walk to see the “sans espine” house & round the town hall & went back to C’s house. Had another talk over his scissors, had some black coffee & at 6 went to the station. Met there M. & Mme de Blaas who had been spending the day at their villa not far from Cortelazzo. We got home to dinner at 8. Hungry & tired.
