6 January 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 6th January [1884]. As there was no church service today I remained quietly at home & wrote. Directly after lunch I went out in gondola to call on Mrs Bronson & sat about ½ hour with her. Then I went on to Carry Eden & sat with her till nearly 5, working & chatting. She was without fever for the first time since her illness began. Mmes Pilat & Lambert came to see her & I left her to them. Henry called for me and we went to tea at Mrs Brown’s in Balbi Valier palace & met Col. Crawford & Emily R. We brought Emily home to dine with us. On our return we were astonished to find Mr Thomas Bruce’s card– He had been twice & we were most vexed to have missed him. I rushed off in search of him & found him at the Britannia & that Mrs Bruce & their son & daughter were with them. I settled that they shd dine with us tomorrow & went home to dinner. After dinner we went to the Canevaros to spend the eveng. Henry & Ct Canevaro played écarté. We ladies worked & talked & had a little music. Sr Pinero & Ct Morosini. We came home at 11.
